Abstract:

The dimensions of health are always changing. It is a well-known fact that children undergo frequent episodes of respiratory tract infections. Due to specific anatomical and physiological peculiarities and immature immune responses children become more susceptible to respiratory infections. The respiratory system is most vulnerable to infections and considered as the prime victim of hypersensitization in most of the circumstances. Respiratory Tract Infections (RTI) accounting 50% of patients attending pediatric OPD in developing and even developed countries of the world. It will be quite interesting to note that child between four to eight years of age is known as a catarrhal child which itself indicate the prevalence of the same among this particular age group. On the other hand, deterioration of immunity in the human population particularly in children is the subject of concern in the present era. That is primarily because of changing lifestyle, food habits more than that deviation from the ethics of medical practice. A study report clearly indicates as many as 10 million antibiotic prescriptions per year are directed toward respiratory conditions for which they are unlikely to provide benefit. Such non-judicious use of antibiotics and corticosteroids in contemporary system of medicine has led to the iatrogenic suppression of host immunity and birth of multi-drug resistant traits of pathogens. This phenomenon, in turn, results in the recurrence of RTI. The conventional system of medicines has many limitations in preventing RTI and this is one of the potential windows for Ayurvedic herbal therapeutic intervention. Ayurveda has many drugs that act on complaints of the respiratory system and are immunomodulators as well, which are proven for their efficacy in the respiratory system and are immunomodulation. Elaborately under the concepts of Kasa, Vyadhikshamtva, Ojas, and Rasayana.

Abstract:

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world. The burden of cancer is believed to be doubled by 2020 and nearly triple by 2030. The word cancer came from a Greek words Karkinos to describe carcinoma tumors by a physician Hippocrates (460-370 BC). Cancer later defined as normal cells in a particular part of the body begin to grow out of control. All types of cancer cells continue to grow, divide and re-divide instead of dying and form new abnormal cells. Some types of cancer cells often travel to other parts of the body through blood circulation or lymph vessels (metastasis), where they begin to grow cancer long-term survivors, have poor health outcomes than individuals without cancer, obesity, poor dietary choices, inactivity and continued smoking have shown negative outcomes in cancer survivors. Cancer is usually treated by precision medicine, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy and stem cell transplantation. Side effects of chemotherapy are: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, alopecia, constipation, etc. whereas radiation therapy can produce systemic side effects such as fatigue, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, alteration in the taste, sleep disturbance, headache, dry skin, constipation etc. Late complications of these therapies also include pharyngitis, esophagitis, laryngitis, persistent dysphagia, fatigue, hepatotoxicity, infertility and cognitive deficits. These side effects have a disturbing effect on the quality of life of cancer patients. Cancer patients, who are suffering with this disease and effected by the harmful side effects from chemotherapeutic drugs are looking back to natural remedies hoping for a better cure. Natural therapies such as Ayurveda, ancient science of life make use of herbal products, herbo-mineral products in cancer treatment to ward off the harmful side effects of chemo and radiotherapy, adjuvant to improve the quality of life. The Rasayana improves the quality of life, if taken as adjuvant along with chemo or radiotherapy. Some of our drugs and preparations such as amritaprasham, ashwagandha rasayana, brahma rasayana, chyavanprasha, narasimharasayana, and triphalachurna were found to be radio-protective in cancer treatment. Even though not authenticated by research, the ancient knowledge of holistic Ayurvedic medicine immersed in wisdom of nature may one day bring an end to suffering.

Title: Incorporation of holistic medicine into academic healthcare setting

Time : 09:45 - 10:15

Biography:

Chiti Parikh is board certified in Internal and Integrative Medicine with additional training in Functional Medicine, Ayurveda and Acupuncture. She is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical School where she plays an active role in clinical care, education and research. She co-founded the Integrative Health and Well Being Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital, USA.

Abstract:

An integrated care model combines evidence based conventional medical approach with holistic modalities to address not just the physical symptoms but also the psychological, social, spiritual and environmental influences on health and wellbeing. Three years ago, we created the Intgerative Health and Wellbeing program to bring evidence based holistic modalities into academic healthcare setting. When we began this venture, we took a great deal of time to learn how others had developed and sustained similar programs. We visited established Integrative Health programs around the country and met with leaders in the field and who are actively expanding the footprint of the integrative approach in the U.S. and globally. We thought it equally important to understand our own institution and the patients we would soon serve. Through our process of discovery, we applied what we had learned into a new model and launched The Integrative Health and Wellbeing Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital in 2015. This program offers services such as physician consultation, nutrition, psychotherapy, Ayurveda, functional medicine, acupuncture, meditation, yoga, Reiki and Pilates. These services are offered alongside conventional medical plan in a team based approach. There are several elements that have been integral to our early success: stakeholder engagement, strategic planning, organizational structure and operations, marketing and communications, building performance metrics, and building our team. We would like to share some of these lessons we have learned along the way. We hope this knowledge can help other clinicians and healthcare institutions create successful and sustainable programs by embracing a more holistic care approach to care.

Abstract:

Low backache is a very commonly encountered clinical condition for many clinicians. Very commonly observed cause of such cases is Intervertebral Disc Prolapse (IDP) into various gradations. In Government hospitals, I decided to look for an economic and effective remedy for such common problem from all required agencies and initiated our clinical work, administered a special combination of medicine by Ano -rectal route, which is popularly called as Basti in Ayurveda. Using this modality, I made a special combination of medicated oil (a special preparation) added with some specially processed calcium product. This is a special procedure – patient is allowed to be on table in left lateral position. After asking him to take deep breath to pronounce numbers in one sequence to make him free from all muscle spasms. Then a judiciously made special combination of Medicated oil added with a special calcium supplement is administered through Ano-rectal route by a special procedure carefully adapting the pre operative, operative and post operative protocols.(A completely non surgical procedure). We will allow patient to minimal amount of movements. This particular treatment modality is administered continuously for (07) days. In 2 to 3 cycles of treatment, patient improves much on his complaints. And when oral medications, responds very significantly allotted a dissertation work on this subject to one of my Post Graduate scholar and collected data properly for sharing on medical platforms. The study gave us much encouraging results. Pain and stiffness, restricted movements are significantly reduced and Quality of life improved remarkably.

Associated with Ayush Ministry Government of India on rejuvenation of alternative medicine. Improvement of quality of human life without the support of pharmacology.

Abstract:

The safe structure is the champion among the most complex systems of the body. Immunity is the limit of the human body to react to remote antigen and slaughter it. Innate safe response does not have immunologic memory, whereas adaptive immunity, on the other hand, is antigen ward and antigen specific. The biochemical part of innate immunity fuse supplement system, lysosomes and interferons. Role of supplements in innate immunity is comprised of nine proteins (C1-C9), which are a part of fragments and actuation. Adaptive immunity acts when innate immunity is inadequate in discarding specific pathogens and pathogen specific cells. The adaptive resistance contains two-fold limbs of cell and humoral immunity. IgG, IgA, IgM and IgD are the immunoglobins against various pathogenesis and pollutions in different concentrations in blood, protection against maladies. Bone marrow is the major hematopoietic organ and fundamental lymphoid organ; it is a site of cell duplication and maturation. Adaptive immunity is envisioned to update body’s resistance against insusceptible framework ailments and tumors too. In sound individuals the immunostimulants are required to fill in as prophylactic or promotive expert, i.e. enhancing the basal level of safe response through Azadirachta indica (Neem) Kingdom: Plantae, Division: Mangnoliophyta, Order: Sapindales Family: Maliaceae Genus: Azadirachta indica. Neem is comprehensively discovered all through the country. Biomedical research has revealed that neem is antagonistic to human immune deficiency disease. Strength of neem as, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, anti-hyper glycemic, antiulcer, antimalarial, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic properties. Thus summarizing, the wide range of pharmacological contribution of neem plant. Its focus engages phagocytic activity and antigen acquainting limit with macrophages. Abstract:

According to the arthritis Foundation, one in every two will develop symptoms of knee Osteoarthritis (OA) during their lives. One of the primary symptoms of persons with knee osteoarthritis is pain. Severity of the joint pain can vary from a minor ache to a severe and disabling pain accompanied by difficulty in walking due to instability of the knee. Due to the fact that OA is affecting millions worldwide and is often a progressive and irreversible degenerative process, functional improvement and pain control are reasonable treatment goals. Also measures need to be developed to prevent early progression of the disease. Currently the annually estimated cost per year to treat OA ranges from $15.5 to $26.6 billion, with some researchers estimating these figures to be much lower and the total cost is actually believed to exceed $89.1 billion in the near future. Despite the available treatment methods, there still persist a host of inadequacies that make cost containment a real issue Viddha, a non-pharmacological, local therapy of Ayurveda provides immediate pain relief as observed in the pilot study carried out on 10 patients at CBPACS, New Delhi. It is observed that Viddha practiced in patients with knee joint pain, not responding to NSAIDs and analgesics are getting immediate pain relief with increased range of motion etc. All it needs is 26-gauge half inch short, fine, brown hypodermic needle making it very much cost effective, just few minutes for the procedure to perform and significant analgesia without almost nil side effects with possibility of arresting the progression of disease.

Title: Understanding the concept of psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) in Ayurveda

Time : 14:30-15:00

Biography:

Aparna k (BAMS,MD,PhD) is dedicated to spreading the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda in its true essence and authenticity. She was presented Jivaka award for her outstanding academic performance during her studies. Her post-graduation research thesis on rejuvenation therapies was selected as the best thesis in her college. Her PhD on role of yogic practices and Ayurveda medicines on generalized anxiety disorders was deeply applauded. Dr. Aparna has presented papers in numerous national and international seminars and published research papers. Her main field of interest is mind body medicine

Abstract:

Psychoneuroimmunology can be defined as the study of interactions between behavior, neural and endocrine function, and immune processes. On going research suggests that the mind and body share bidirectional influences, and the science of Psychoneuroendoimmunology (psychoneuroimmunology and neuroendocrinology) identifies specific mechanisms by which these mind-body changes are mediated. The mind and body communicate bi directionally continuously through chemical messengers. Positive and negative affective states probably create different neuroimmune responses in the body and thus influence health and recovery from illness. Two competing responses, the stress response and the relaxation response, counterbalance each other on an ongoing basis.Ayurveda, the ancient system of medicine is one of the most time tested medical system existing till date. Ayurveda defines Ayu (life) as the combined state of Sharira (body), Indriya (senses), Sattva (mind) and Atma (Soul). According to Ayurveda, health is not merely freedom from disease. It is essential that body, mind and soul are in an excellent state so that the individual can perform his functions and fulfill his role in life. Charaka’s concept of Adhyatma Dravya Guna Samgraha very well explains the new evolving branch in the west – the mind body medicine. The thoughts and feelings can affect our health. Ayurveda credits this concept years back which has been explained in Adhyatma Dravya Guna Samgraha. Atma, Mind which constitutes the emotions, thoughts, feeling along with intellect and its dimensions can be a cause for happiness, health, sorrow and disease depending on the indulgence and feedback it is given. This work intend to throw light on the concept of Psychoneuroimmunology in Ayurveda.
